....And A Not Fatty New Year!

Christmas dinner. It gets me every time, y'all. Well, it's gotten me for the past 4 years, at least. The whole process begins when my glossy Bon Appetit arrives in the mail, because I still believe in the revival of print magazines. Then, I take a look at all of the various articles Adam Rappaport has ok-ed. I may find a beautiful beef wellington, made with buffalo and oyster mushrooms. Or maybe a new latke recipe featuring Jerusalem artichokes. And there's always a mile-high chocolate cake that I wolf whistle at and tear out the picture to hang in my imaginary locker room. Then, I get a pen and paper (I want to seem old school. I'm not. I use my notepad app on my phone. PS that font, right? Get more options), and I write out a menu for Christmas Day Dinner.  December 25th rolls around and my family is always giddy with delight as we take our places at the table. We are thankful for each other, we promise that we will be healthier in the new year, and we dig in to eno

Comfort Food For Skinny People

Well, autumn is here, whether the weather feels that way or not. After spending all summer avoiding my stove and oven, it's time to break out the apron and indulge my cooking and baking cravings for the best time of year to snuggle up with a warm bowl of goodness. The average American puts on 8 pounds between October 31st and January 1st every year. If you're not working hard in the gym to get all that weight off, then in a mere 5 years, you've gained 40 pounds that you gets harder to lose the older you get. The answer to most people seems simple: 1. Binge eat during the holidays 2. Pledge to work it off with a new year's resolution 3. Lose some of the holiday weight/water weight and feel overly confident 4. Burn out on workouts by February 5. Step on the scale and see a number that is still higher than last year I do not subscribe to this line of thought. I think anyone should be able to eat whatever they want, when they want. You should also be smart about yo

Pickle Me This

It is summer in Texas and all I want to do in this heat is stay inside and avoid the oven until December. The true tragedy in this Dallas oven we live in is that my snacking habits have become lazy. When did I start craving Teddy Grahams instead of fresh fruit or vegetables? It's far too easy to throw a processed, packaged snack in my grocery cart instead of taking the time to chop up some produce for a midday bite. In light of the current heat crisis here, I've found a way to make some snacks ahead of time that are both refreshing and filling. The solution? Pickled fruits and vegetables! They can be sweet or salty, and the acidity helps your body feel full faster. They're great individually, or when paired with any of these meal suggestions. Check out three make-ahead, cool down recipes! Asian Ginger Pickles: Ingredients: 2 English Cucumbers, thinly sliced (about 1/4 inch) 4 Peeled Carrots, sliced into rounds 1/4 Cup Shredded Fresh Ginger Root 6 Small Red Radishes

Dallas Food Truck Crawl

There is no better way to spend a weekend afternoon than to go on a food crawl, in my opinion. Whether it's doing an around-the-world theme in a food court or waking up early to try eggs benedict from 3 different brunch places, I am always down for some marathon eating and a seriously gassy nap afteward. So today, as my husband and I were driving home from donating some items and time to Operation Kindness (a no-kill shelter in Dallas, and a great place to ADOPT A DOG please excuse this shameless plug ), we saw a large food truck rally in the parking lot by the shops at Park Lane. He didn't need to even ask if I was interested, and soon we were running through the parking garage to get to the trucks ASAP. I read on twitter that there was over an hour wait at each truck at Frisco StrEATs the day before, and I was not about to wait that long for some grub. There were over so many trucks there! We targeted Easy Slider , Gennarino's , Short-N-Sweet , and Nammi . I was hoping

Sweet Summer Desserts

The warm weather of Spring and Summer bring about so many lovely reminders of previous years. The smell of flowers, weddings galore, backyard barbeques, and time spent with family and friends. What these seasons also bring with them can be some unpleasant weight gain. No matter how hard you may be working on your swimsuit figure, the heat and the sun makes our bikini bodies tired, and leaves us craving sugar for some added energy. As easy as it may be to reach for that fudgsicle in the freezer or dig into frozen yogurt...twice a day...there are a few recipes that can help satisfy that sugar craving without adding a lot of the sweet toxin to your diet. The recipes below all contain healthy servings of protein, fiber, and antioxidants, all of which keep people saying your body, not your diet, is super sweet.   Strawberry Cheesecake Bites   Ingredients: 16oz container of strawberries, hulled 8oz. package of cream cheese- You need the protein from full milk fat! 1 teaspoon honey 1

Mini Herb Frittatas Recipe

Here's another recipe from the baby shower I hosted this past weekend. Like most of my healthy recipes, greek yogurt plays a big role in making the recipe lighter, healthier, and with less milk fat. I also love using recipes with lots of fresh herbs because it ups the flavor profile without adding unnecessary calories or sodium. Mini Herb Frittatas Recipe Ingredients: 8 Large Brown Eggs 6 tablespoons 2% Plain Greek Yogurt 2 tablespoons Organic Skim Milk 1 cup Finely Grated Pecorino Romano 2 heaping tablespoons Chopped Fresh Chives or Green Onions 2 heaping tablespoons Finely Chopped Dill 1 teaspoon Kosher Salt 1 teaspoon Ground Black Pepper Heat oven to 300 degrees F. Beat eggs in a medium bowl until smooth (no one wants a lumpy frittata). ADd remaining ingredients and whisk to combine. Pour mixture into greased mini muffin tins (I used coconut oil for easy removal). Leave about 1/4 of an inch of space in the mini muffin tins to allow the frittatas to puff up nicel

Chewy Cinnamon Sugar Cookies

This is a little bit of a deviation from my typically healthy recipes, but, since I am handing out cinnamon sugar as a Sugar N Spice favor for my dear friend Traci's baby shower, I wanted to put up a recipe to accompany it. Below is my recipe for a chewy, rich, and delicious cinnamon sugar cookie. I love a snickerdoodle as much as the next gal, but these cookies truly bring out the cinnamon sugar flavor and are a little more dense than a snickerdoodle. Enjoy, and for those visiting the website after the shower, thanks for coming! INGREDIENTS: For Topping: 3 tablespoons white sugar 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon For Cookies: 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup dark brown sugar 1/2 cup white sugar ( I used beet sugar) 1 cup softened unsalted butter 3 eggs 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract Preheat oven to 325 degrees. In a small bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon for rolling the dough in. Set aside. In a medium bowl, combine
